What is Concerta?
Concerta (methylphenidate extended release) features the same main ingredient as the well-known ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) drug Ritalin, but is designed to release the methylphenidate gradually over the course of roughly 12 hours. This is especially helpful for treating children who attend school, as they can simply take one Concerta pill in the morning rather than taking multiple immediate-release doses of their ADHD drug throughout the day. An extended release medication also means that patients are able to maintain a steadier amount of the drug in their systems over time, rather than fluctuating amounts often associated with immediate release formulations.
Concerta may increase Risk of Suicide, Psychosis
Health Canada, the Canadian regulatory agency in charge of drug safety, warned in March 2015 that all ADHD drugs including Concerta may cause some individuals to develop suicidal thoughts and a lack of impulse control which may lead to suicide attempts or suicide. Previously, Health Canada had warned of suicide risks for only one ADHD drug, Strattera, but in 2015 they stated, “New information has emerged since to suggest that the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours may apply to all other ADHD drugs.” In this recent Concerta suicide warning, Health Canada said that all prescribers of ADHD medications must be aware of “the importance of monitoring moods, behaviours, thoughts and feelings in adults and children taking these medications, and the importance of taking psychiatric disorders into account when prescribing these drugs.”
In addition to the recent warning of Concerta suicide risks by Health Canada, multiple scientific studies have suggested that Concerta and related drugs may cause hallucinations, psychosis, mania and other dangerous psychiatric side effects in some patients—particularly in children, teens, and adolescents. One study, conducted by The Toronto Star, identified 12 adverse reports of children experiencing suicidal thoughts on Concerta and at least one confirmed Concerta suicide in Canada.
Additional Serious Concerta Side Effects
In addition to sever psychiatric side effects associated with Concerta, this medication may also cause the following potentially dangerous side effects:
- Heart attack
- Sudden cardiac death
- Heart failure
- Rapid heart rate
- High blood pressure
- Kidney failure

ADHD medications may help many children, adolescents, and even adults maintain better mental focus, control behavioral outbursts, and live more productive and fulfilling lives and many experts agree that the potential benefits of these drugs outweigh the risks. However, in light of the documented risk of Concerta suicide, psychosis, and other dangerous side effects it is essential that care providers and family members of individuals taking Concerta remain alert to any signs of mental or emotional changes or disturbances.
If you or someone you love has suffered from severe Concerta side effects including suicidal ideations or psychosis, or if a loved one committed suicide while taking Concerta, you may be entitled to substantial compensation for your damages. Though health regulators in Canada warned of the potential risk of Concerta suicide, this warning has not been mandated in the United States and no Concerta recall has been initiated at this time. Some individuals affected by Concerta suicide now claim that if they had known of the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions associated with this drug, they might have been able to prevent tragedy and suffering.
