How Does the Artelon CMC Spacer Work?
Approved by the FDA for use in the United States in 2007, the Artelon CMC Spacer is made by Artimplant AB and marketed by Small Bone Innovations. It is surgically implanted near the base of the thumb to provide comfort for patients who have early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the carpometacarpal joint.
In a healthy hand, cartilage serves as a cushion between the hand and finger bones and the joints. In a hand affected by osteoarthritis, however, the cartilage has broken down and movement of the hand, finger, thumb, and wrist can be very painful. The Artelon CMC Spacer is a small, T-shaped piece of gauze that a surgeon implants at the base of the thumb during outpatient surgery. It is meant to act as “scaffolding” for the joint until the patient’s own tissue can regenerate. Some of this device is composed of biodegradable materials, which are meant to gradually dissolve into the patient’s body over the course of roughly six years.
Artelon Spacer Side Effects and Complications
The Artelon CMC Spacer is intended to ease the pain of osteoarthritis, but in some cases it has done just the opposite. Multiple patients have suffered an inflammatory response to the Artelon Spacer, and this can cause swelling, intense pain, and bone loss and often requires additional hand surgery to correct. The Artelon CMC Spacer has also been known to break apart inside a patient’s hand, and in some cases the surgery needed to repair the damaged joint involves harvesting tendons from other areas of the body, such as the arms. This device has also caused some patients’ thumbs to become permanently misshapen or disfigured.
Artelon side effects for which patients may be compensated in a dangerous medical device Artelon Spacer lawsuit include:
- Disfigurement or misshapen thumb
- Decreased range of motion
- Bone loss
- Redness in the area of the implant
- Further thumb or hand surgeries
