A History of Zimmer Knee Recalls
The recent recall of the Zimmer Persona knee is not the first time this medical device manufacturer has been required to remove products from the market to protect patients.
Zimmer Persona Knee Recall
The FDA issued a recall for the Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate on March 12, 2015 after a high number of patients reported painful device loosening and premature knee failure requiring revision surgery. Zimmer marketed the Persona knee system as the “Personalized Knee” because its design afforded a remarkably accurate fit. This remarkable design, however, proved to be defective just a few years after the device came into use. Patients who are implanted with a recalled Zimmer Persona knee may experience the following side effects:
- Zimmer Persona knee loosening
- Zimmer Persona knee failure
- Necessary revision surgery to replace Zimmer Persona knee
Roughly 11,658 Zimmer Persona knees were affected by this recall, and had been distributed to at least 25 states and implanted between November 2012 and January 2015. While surgeons and hospitals were warned of the recall in a notice sent by Zimmer in February, it is not clear whether the company will notify patients who have been implanted with recalled and potentially defective knees.
Zimmer NexGen Knee Recalls
The first Zimmer NexGen knee recall was issued in September 2010 when the FDA received a high level of “Complaints of loosening of the implanted device requiring revision surgery.” Another Zimmer knee recall was issued two months later to address similar issues with additional models and components of the NexGen knee.
Zimmer has become the defendant in thousands of dangerous medical device lawsuits as a result of the high rate of failure and multiple recalls of the Zimmer NexGen knee system. At this time, more than 1, 300 Zimmer NexGen knee lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) before District Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer in the Northern District of Illinois and are scheduled for bellwether trials in 2015.
