DePuy Pinnacle Hip Problems
There has not yet been a DePuy Pinnacle hip implant recall, but manufacturer Johnson & Johnson has had many complaints about this hip replacement system. The metal-on-metal DePuy Pinnacle hip is made of a cobalt-chromium alloy, and when the metal components of the hip rub together the friction can cause these parts to wear prematurely. This has been proven to release substantial metal debris, which can be absorbed into the body, causing inflammatory reactions. The friction of metal-on-metal DePuy Pinnacle parts can also cause the condition metallosis, which is a result of elevated cobalt and chromium levels in the tissue around the implanted joint. Metallosis symptoms include pain, swelling and inflammation, and a rash that indicates dying tissue.
Metallosis is not the only dangerous side effect of DePuy Pinnacle hip failure: a number of painful and serious issues have arisen for recipients of the DePuy Pinnacle hip implant, including:
- Difficulty standing or walking
- Clicking or popping
- Fracture of the bone around the hip implant
- Hip implant dislocation
- Nerve, tissue, and muscle damage
- DePuy hip implant loosening
- DePuy hip implant revision surgery
DePuy ASR Hip Recall
In 2010, the DePuy ASR hip replacement was recalled after increasing reports of hip implant failure and metallosis. The DePuy Pinnacle hip is similar to the ASR hip in design. Both DePuy hips contain metal-on-metal components, and DePuy even claimed that the ASR was a “substantial equivalent” to the Pinnacle when they filed for FDA approval of the later-model ASR in 2005.
