What is Listeria?
Listeria is a form of food poisoning caused by the bacteria listeria monocytogenes. In most cases, this bacteria is killed during pasteurization or through proper food preparation, but it can still affect produce grown in contaminated soil or irrigated with contaminated water. Common sources of listeria poisoning also include dairy foods, raw and cooked meats, and processed meats like deli meats or hot dogs. While most cases of listeria are mild enough to go unnoticed, this bacteria can cause serious and potentially fatal health threats including septicemia and meningitis.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 2,500 Americans are diagnosed with listeria every year. Of those infections, up to 500 are fatal.
Symptoms of Listeria
Listeria symptoms normally present themselves 24 hours after a person is exposed to the bacteria, and in most people these symptoms resolve within a couple of days. However, individuals whose immune systems are already compromised, such as very young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with a pre-existing condition, may experience symptoms that are more severe and long-lasting. Symptoms of listeria may include:
- Muscle aches
In some cases, a listeria infection may spread to a person’s nervous system. This may cause serious health complications and symptoms such as:
- Lack of alertness
- Stiff neck
- Loss of balance
