Michaels Shattering Vases

If you have been cut by a shattering glass vase from Michaels, you could be owed compensation.
U.S. Government sues Michaels over Unsafe Products
On Tuesday, April 21, a joint lawsuit was filed against Michaels Inc. by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Texas. In this lawsuit, Michaels is accused of failing to report to the CPSC that glass vases were shattering when handled by customers and employees in their stores. The plaintiffs allege that the vases, which were made in China, were defective and that their glass was too thin to endure the “pressure of normal handling”. Reports show that consumers have suffered lacerations so severe as to require stitches, severed tendons, and even permanent nerve damage when these vases shattered in their hands.
According to an article featured on TheHill.com, The vases in question were sold at Michaels stores in the United States and Canada between 2006 and 2010. Government officials claim that Michaels was aware of the tendency of the 20-inch glass vases to shatter as early as 2007, but that the company failed to alert the CPSC to this issue until 2010. They also tried to dodge responsibility for importing the vases.
"We believe that Michaels chose to profit from selling defective vases that put people at risk," CPSC Chairman Elliot Kaye said in a statement quoted by Reuters. "To protect the public, companies are required to report potential product hazards and risks to CPSC on a timely basis. That means within 24 hours, not more than a year as in Michaels' case."
In response to the lawsuit, a Michaels representative said in a statement, “We stand by our actions in this matter and believe that the facts will show that Michaels acted promptly and appropriately.”
