NuvaRing was FDA approved for use in the U.S. in October 2001. It is a small ring that is inserted at home into the vagina once a month to prevent pregnancy. The ring releases two synthetic hormones, which help prevent ovulation and also reduce the odds of sperm penetration. One of these hormones, etonogestral (a synthetic progestin), has been shown in studies to significantly increase the risk of blood clots known as venous thromboembolism, which could be fatal. This synthetic hormone is so dangerous that in 2007 the advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned an FDA ban on it. Because NuvaRing releases hormones directly into the blood stream, it carries a higher risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart problems than traditional birth control pills.
All forms of hormone birth control present a risk of side effects, but this risk is higher with NuvaRing than it is with birth control pills. Since its release, NuvaRing has been linked to more than 300 reports of serious injury or health complications Common side effects of NuvaRing include:
- Yeast infections
- Weight gain
- In addition to these relatively mild side effects, NuvaRing users are also at risk for some potentially fatal side effecs, which may include:
- Pulmonary embolism
- Blood clots
- Heart attack
- Myocardial infarction
- Heart arrhythmia
- Gallbladder disease and possible gallbladder removal
- Deep vein thrombosis
These serious NuvaRing side effects can cause severe and permanent organ damage, oxygen deprivation, amputation, and even death.
NuvaRing FDA Warnings
In 2005, the FDA mandated that heightened warnings be provided to NuvaRing users, and they added more warnings to NuvaRing labels in 2008. These warnings are for doctors and their patients, and they state that blood clots and other NuvaRing side effects are a risk, and that this risk is heightened for women who have a history of hypertension, blood clots, or heart disease. If you use NuvaRing and have any of these pre-existing conditions, you need to be aware of the symptoms of NuvaRing injuries so that you can intercept any problems before they become more serious.
