Recall of TigerPaw Surgical Staple System
On May 7, the FDA issued a recall of the TigerPaw System II after at least one patient death was linked to more than 51 reports of these surgical staples failing to completely close surgical incisions. This recall is a Class I recall—the most serious form of recall issued by the FDA and reserved for products known to pose a reasonable probability of severe injury or death.
The TigerPaw System II is a mechanical surgical tool known as an implantable left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion device. Basically, this device is used to seal off the LAA in some individuals with atrial fibrillation in order to prevent possible stroke or blood clots.
The reason that the TigerPaw System II has been recalled is that in some patients, the system may not close completely. This can cause tears to the heart tissue and severe internal bleeding. According to the FDA, incomplete closure of TigerPaw II surgical staples could cause “tissue tears and/or bleeding, including a possible tear on the left atrial wall (top left chamber) during use of the device.”
Roughly 4,154 TigerPaw System II devices have been included in this recall. Recalled units were distributed from April 1, 2013 through March 23, 2015. The maker of this device, Maquet Medical Systems, has sent an Urgent Medical Device Recall notice to all customers, who should inspect their inventory for any recalled devices and quarantine them.
