Wright Conserve Hip Problems
The main issue with the Wright Conserve hip, you need to understand how the device works. To implant this hip replacement system, the surgeon caps the patient’s thigh bone with a metal ball, then replaces the hip socket with a metal cup designed to fit that ball. Both of these parts are made mostly of metal, and when these metal parts rub together the friction can cause serious damage and injury.
The Wright Conserve hip is also referred to as “Wright Conserve Hip Cup”, “Wright Conserve Plus Hip Cup”, and the “Wright Conserve Plus”. The following Wright hip components have been the subject of lawsuits:
- Conserve Total Hip System
- Conserve Total A-Class Advanced Metal
- Conserve Plus Total Resurfacing Hip System
- Conserve Femoral Surface Replacement
In September 2011, the National Joint Registry for England and Wales released its Eighth Annual Report, in which it compared the Wright Conserve system to other hip implants. These researchers found that the Wright Conserve presents an alarming 7.99% rate of failure after five years, while the five year failure rate for other systems is 4.36. The rate of hip revision surgery linked to the Wright Conserve was only topped by that of the DePuy Pinnacle hip, which has been recalled because of the significant damage it caused to many patients.
Metal-on-metal hip replacements such as the DePuy Pinnacle and the Stryker Rejuvenate hip have been linked to such a high rate of failure and complications that the FDA has dedicated an entire section of its web site to alerts and information about metal-on-metal hips.
Wright Conserve Hip Injuries
Patients who have received a Wright Conserve hip have reported a number of alarming injuries and complications. Below is a list of just a few of the issues reported by replacement hip recipients:
- Difficulty putting weight on the replaced hip
- Changes in ability to walk or in gait
- Noises coming from the implant (most common is clicking)
- Dislocation of the hip joint
- Broken bones
Possibly the most severe Wright Conserve hip complication is a form of metal toxicity known as metallosis, which is a product of friction between metal hip parts causing small shards of cobalt and chromium to enter the blood stream. Metallosis can cause a number of painful and potentially fatal complications, including:
- Tissue or bone death (necrosis)
- Heart muscle compromisation
- Thyroid gland interference
- Nerve damage

In many cases, the damage and injuries sustained by Wright Conserve hip recipients is so severe that the patient needs to under costly and painful hip replacement revision surgery.
